Yesterday, my Aunt who lives here in Seattle, took me into her care for a couple of hours. She's the only one from my mom's side of the family who had the guts to move out of Guam and into the mainland. Despite being the oldest, she's always teased by my mom and the other brothers and sisters for being so crazy protective and paranoid about everything in her life. My mom told me that even in our relatives' house, she still insists bringing her purse inside the bathroom with her and still holds it while sleeping. It doesn't really bother me, but it makes me laugh.
But somehow, I can't help but think that her mind and soul are so strong, despite her craziness on the outside. When I was hanging out with her yesterday, she never stopped thinking about making me feel comfortable. I was given hot milk, a big muffin, a full Filipino lunch that included lechon and lumpia, a towel to take home in case I didn't have enough, a new pair of warm socks, and the list goes on. Her and her husband don't have much to spare, but they were so caring for me. She even gave me "allowance" for the next week because she knew I wasn't working. But she also knew I had enough money to survive her from my own savings and work and still she kindly slipped that money into my wallet, hehe! Apparently, she does that to all of the cousins here and she knows she doesn't have to! Acts of kindness are rare these days..
